It was a mixed bag in the end, but some chapters hit me on the head. Lots of advice I can start use right away. Other things were about writing business reports and press releases—not my cup of tea. So I could skip some chapters while others gave me tools to become a better writer. In short: speak like a real human, skip the jargon, don’t use weasel words to water down your statement, talk from your own perspective, use “we” or “I”.
#Don’t use weasel words
Yesterday I started reading 📚 Writing Without Bullshit, a book that I bought several years ago. I didn’t vibe with the author back then so I put it down about a third into it. It speaks to me more now. It’s direct. It’s given me a few helpful tips to shape up my writing. Don’t use weasel words to water down what you want to say. Words like very, probably, a bit and some will make you look like a coward. Better to say what you want and stand by it. Don’t chicken out your writing. I will think about this as I develop my own style through journaling.
