#Things to consider

  • There are 450 years until the Trisolarans will arrive in the solar system and wipe out humanity. The world is discussing what they should do. Build defense systems? Send off an escape fleet? The world has transformed into a wartime economy.
  • The wallfacer project. 4 individuals get the ultimate power to develop a plan in their heads for how humanity should deal with the invading aliens in 450 years. They can never talk with anyone else about it because all written communication could be read instantly. Fascinating idea. What to do?
  • After 200 years humanity feels victorious. They’ve built a space fleet with over 2000 war ships. Humanity starts feeling sympathy with Trisolaris. Some movements would like to offer them a place on the moons of Neptune or on Mars. The latest information shows that the Trisolaran fleet has decreased over time. Maybe they want to negotiate peace at this point? But they sent a probe 200 years ago that’s due to arrive now. Nobody knows what it’s four. Everyone is optimistic. Maybe it’s a peace sign? Only Luo Ji feels something’s off.
  • There is power in technology.

#Reading log

2023-10-28: For about one week this autumn I was deep down in this book. I read it intensely and enjoyed much of it. I like this concept of scale when a book is dealing with a story that stretches hundreds of years.

2023-10-23: Continuing to read 📚 The Dark Forest. In 4 days I’ve read 300 pages.

#The universe as a dark forest

Think of the universe as a dark forest. Every civilization a lone hunter and its sole purpose is survival. When that’s the case sharing your location is equal to oblivion. Even if a civilization has the upper hand right now and is the stronger force there is nothing stopping a technological explosion for the other one. So the only way to stay safe is to obliterate everyone else you know of.
