Why it matters: This book taught me about the diseases most likely to affect me as I grow older. It gave me a framework for how to think about exercise. And it told me that diets don’t really matter. The most important book for me in 2023 and a clear reread on a yearly basis.

#Things to consider

  1. You could decide to eliminate all sugar-sweetened beverages, and that would be a great first step.
  2. Exercise is by far the most potent longevity “drug.” No other intervention does nearly as much to prolong our lifespan and preserve our cognitive and physical function.
  3. This is what we want for ourselves: to live longer with good function and without chronic disease, and with a briefer period of morbidity at the end of our lives.
  4. Undergo a DEXA scan annually to assess the visceral fat.
  5. Five decades into the war on cancer, it seems clear that no single “cure” is likely to be forthcoming. Rather, our best hope likely lies in figuring out better ways to attack cancer on all three of these fronts: prevention, more targeted and effective treatments, and comprehensive and accurate early detection.
